The Directorate of Special Services through its’ HIV/Alcohol and Drug Abuse Sub-Committee conducted a capacity building for staff on alcohol and drug abuse on the 4th April, 2022. The aim of the training was to sensitize staff on Drug Abuse and its harmful effects as pertains to employment, family, education, and general social interactions.
Some of the topics highlighted included the types of drugs, both legal and illegal, methods of administration, myths and facts about drug abuse, reasons for drug ingestion, effects of drug abuse, among others.
While giving her opening remarks, Professor Hellen Atieno, the Director of Special Services thanked the members for finding time to be part of the training. The participants also shared their experiences positively contributing to the discussion around best practices and effective use of drugs in the society.
The training incorporated members of staff from various departments within the University.
The Directorate conducts frequent sensitization programs for both staff and students at large on mental health issues, gender, HIV and AIDS and alcohol and drug abuse. Some of the partners the Directorate collaborate with include GLOBCOM, Centre for Health Solutions, and Family Health Options Kenya, who partner with the Directorate to conduct peer education among the students and advise on topical issues encompassing student health and social well-being.
